A new PBS documentary exploring the contributions Floridians made during World War II and their sacrifices that helped win the war.

the project

A State at War: Florida During WWII is an hour-long documentary to air on PBS, tells the fascinating stories of the important contributions Floridians made to help win the war – stories most viewers will be hearing for the first time.

Sarasota-based 82º West Productions, in partnership with the Florida Veterans Foundation, has been researching and planning this project for over a year. Through our relationships with national and private archives, museums and historical societies, we to continue to gather sources for archival footage, home movies, photos, and oral histories.

Some of the historical experts we are currently working with include: Nick Wynne, author of Florida in World War II: Floating Fortress, Eliot Kleinberg author of War in Paradise: Stories of WWII in Florida, Dr. Gary Mormino, history professor and author, as well as other historians and military experts from our growing list of contacts who are excited to contribute to the project.

project funding

To begin production we need to raise the remaining $265,000 of the total project budget of $365,000.

As you can imagine, given the age of some of our interviewees, funding is a major focus for us at the moment. As soon as we have raised at least $265,000, we will begin traveling the state to film interviews with veterans, civilians and historians.

All funds raised for this project are paid directly to the Florida Veterans Foundation, a 501c3 organization created by the Florida Legislature in 2008.

A percentage of your charitable donation will go directly to help Florida Veterans and families in need.
